LEROY, NY — In 2011, Pete McQuillen purchased 13–14 acres of land with a plan to build affordable homes for newly retired people. What he didn’t know was that over the next decade his life would be turned upside down.

Same-sex marriage was made legal nationwide on June 26, 2015 after the Supreme Court announced its decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. Now five years later the topic of same-sex marriage is being brought up again after Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alitomy criticized the same-sex marriage law. Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, also expressed her disagreement with the 2015 decision. Any change to this decision would greatly effect the LGBTQ community.
